full time job? or better paying temp job?

andrew w asked:

So I currently have a full time job 8-5 monday through friday that pays 12 an hour, and i just got offered a long term open ended contract job with IBM that pays 16 an hour, 3rd shift. The obvious perks to the contract job is more pay, and i get benefits from day 1 and i’d have IBM as both a reference and experience on my resume. Where as the job im currently at is only medical after 6 months and no 401k, no life insurance, and isn’t quite what i wanna do (construction for cable company). So my question is, which do i go with? Do i go with the new job that i’d like more and pays more, but is a long term open ended cotract? or stay with the full time less paying job?

  1. are you serious? construction dead end job, or computer based business with endless opportunities, better pay, future growth? hmmmm. Its so frreaking hard!!!!!!

  2. i’d go with the new one and keep looking for a new job in that field, so that way you have references for the same work, and make more money in the short run, do what you like!

  3. my advice would be read the small print, my contract was Long Term temp. but one day i went in and was told my team had been let go under a loop hole which said we could be made redundant at any point without warning if the company review board decided they could no longer afford us. so without warnign i had no job even though it was suggested that the contract would last two years.

    Just be careful

  4. List of companies providing Online Jobs. Everybody dreams of launching a lucrative online job at home business and being able to earn some serious money from it as soon as possible.

  5. Well, it is more money and gets your foot in the door…BUT if there is any remote chance of going on permanently you need to consider what shift and whether or not you are only receiving differential pay.

An open ended contract is not necessarily a bad thing. It means that there is no set date for the position to end. You could go in, blow them away, and get hired on!

Benefits and more money…if you are a solid worker, I would say take the IBM job. Again, it is a foot in the door and once you are there for so long you may be privy to the positions the company is direct hiring for!

  6. You really have to check to see how long the temp job will be. Just understand they can let you go anytime. Also how secure is your Full time job that has alot to do with it.
IBM is a good company with possibilities
But the small job may have security.
    Can you do both?
    wish i could help more.

    Good luck

  7. I think that you should go for the IBM job that you like more. The benefits of having an open-ended contract is that you are very likely to get hired. I recently got a job with a temp agency, and started my current job on 4/28/08. I’m in my third week of work (I only worked 2 of 5 days on my first week of work because of an ankle injury), and I was already offered a permanent position.

This is an ideal case in a perfect world. But if you weigh the benefits against the drawbacks of the jobs (better pay, better experience, especially with what you want to do, benefits package, vs. 3rd shift), ultimately the IBM job seems better in every sense. Even if you do not get hired at the end of the contract period, you still have the experience to go out and find another job that you will enjoy.
